Nazarbayev's Eurasian visit

05.08.2016

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev arrived today on an official visit to Turkey. In Ankara, Nazarbayev will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and negotiations will be held in an extended format. This is the first visit by the head of a foreign state to the Republic of Turkey since the failed pro-US coup on the night of July 15th-16th.

Eurasian choice

Kazakhstan and Turkey have close economic, political and cultural ties. As a Turkic state, Kazakhstan is of special importance for Turkey. At the same time, Kazakhstan is one of the key participants in the Eurasian integration process. It was Nursultan Nazarbayev's idea to create a Eurasian Union, and Kazakhstan is one of the founders of the EAEC and SCO and a strategic ally of Russia.

It is obvious that one of the objectives of the visit is to prepare for the meeting between the Presidents of Russia and Turkey which is scheduled for August 9th, as well as discussions on Turkey's participation in Eurasian integration processes. The failure of the pro-Western coup and purges in the army and government agencies have yielded a sharp deterioration in relations between Turkey, the EU and the US. Under these conditions, the Eurasian vector is the only path open for Turkey.

General security

Issues of security and combating common threats and challenges will also be discussed, including the shutting down of Gulen’s organizations in Kazakhstan and joint counteraction against Islamic armed groups which have intensified their operations in Kazakhstan.
