Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy begins work

04.07.2016

Today in Thessaloniki, Greece, the XXIII Conference of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy begins. This is the only international organization that brings together the legislative bodies of Orthodox countries.

Russian participation

This year, Russian State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin will take part in the work of the agenda, indicating that high attention is being paid by Russia to its Orthodox identity.

Agenda

The assembly’s meeting is taking place one week after the closing of the Council of Crete. Issues related to the Crete council’s activities and related illegitimate attempts to establish control over all local churches will also be reflected in the work of the assembly. Also, attention will be paid to the fight against the modern hedonistic ideology of the West, and on assistance to Christians in the Middle East who are suffering from persecution.

In order to increase the value of the religious factor in global geopolitics, greater attention must be paid by Orthodox countries to the activities of such forums.
