Kerala: mass protests

Protests were held yesterday in the cultural capital of the Indian state of Kerala, in the city of Malappuram. The reason of the protests was the recent initiative of the Government of India to put a common civil law into operation, which would violate the rights of many religious communities.

The main controversy arose around the Islamic law, because the bulk of the protesters are Muslims. Despite the secular character of the Constitution of India is, which is a copy of the American one, based on the historical and cultural traditions. That’s why, the attempts to introduce a secular law were considered as initiative of the West.
