CIS summit opens in Bishkek

16.09.2016

New resolutions on changing the organization’s general approach to work are going to be adopted.

A chance for politics

It is assumed that the CIS could opt for fuller cooperation between member states. Earlier, work was more formal without any prospects or tangible solutions. In the present situation, the leaders of a number of countries are beginning to revise their approaches to working within the framework of the agreement between former Soviet countries.

Outcasts

Ukraine will not be represented at the CIS summit. Only an ambassador will visit. The country stopped paying membership dues after the coup in 2014.

The Moldovan president is also absent, so the country’s delegation to Bishkek is headed by Prime Minister Pavel Filip. Moldova is now immersed in political crisis and corruption scandals. Given Chisinau’s refusal to chair the organization next year, this role has been transferred to Russia.

Georgia withdrew from CIS in 2009.

Preparations for 2017

Russian President Vladimir Putin will present a detailed plan for the Russian Federation's chairmanship of CIS for 2017.  Main priorities and directions of development will be announced. We already know that 2017-2018 will be declared the “year of family” in CIS countries.
