How Cinema Contributed to the Philosophy of Henri Bergson

14.02.2025

I WAS perusing some material by French thinker Henri Bergson (1859–1941) that caused me to consider its political and linguistic ramifications for modern society. It was Bergson who famously argued that consciousness cannot be quantified in the way that one can measure bodies in space. He discovered this during a visit to the cinema during the first years of the twentieth century, when he took an interest in the fact that what you see on the big screen is merely a series of instantaneous snapshots that provide the illusion of movement.

Five points on which Maxim based in the Scriptures

I would like to say a few words about my memories of getting to know Maxim and about how I met him.  As it is now customary – via Telegram. The attitude of world leaders towards the biological fixation of social differences down to life expectancy and the derivation of various human species specialised in services is reminiscent of H.G. Wells’ novel The Time Machine. Wells” novel The Time Machine, where society is divided into two socio-biological species - Eloi and Morlocks, and to Ivan Efremov’s novel The Hour of the Bull, where people of two categories - “ji” (“long-lived”) and “kzhi” (“short-lived”) - live on the planet Tormance, as well as Frank Herbert”s novel Hellstrom’s Hive (Hellstrom”s Hive, 1973), not very well known in our country (at least compared to his “Dune” cycle).

Mr President, when delivering your Address [to the Federal Assembly], you were figuratively pulling trillion by trillion out of your sleeve. As a matter of fact, you proposed an absolutely astonishing plan of the country’s development, truly astonishing. That will be a different Russia, with a completely new infrastructure and social system – nothing short of a dreamland.

Why is Tucker Carlson’s interview considered pivotal for both the West and Russia?

Why is Tucker Carlson’s interview considered pivotal for both the West and Russia?

Let us start with the simpler part: Russia. Here, Tucker Carlson has become a focal point for two polar opposites within Russian society: ideological patriots and elite Westernisers who nonetheless remain loyal to Putin and the Special Military Operation. For patriots, Tucker Carlson is simply ‘one of us’. He is a traditionalist, a right-wing conservative, and a staunch opponent of liberalism. This is what twenty-first-century emissaries to the Russian tsar look like.
