US Security Archive: Europe - no more than a colony

The recently declassified documents of the US Security Service state that the White House had planned to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of Iceland despite the request of Reykjavik on this behalf.

It is known that in the 1950s, Iceland demanded to  the United States guarantees that such weapons are will not be located on the territory of the country, but the Pentagon continued working on the deployment plan before it was announced to the Icelandic authorities.

Then, after the country's threat to withdraw from NATO, Washington admitted that the plan had more minuses than pluses.
