Talks with Erdogan: Merkel stresses importance of democracy

During her visit to Turkey, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the importance of adherence to democratic norms. Merkel made such a statement at a press conference in Ankara.

“In such a time of profound political upheaval, everything must be done to continue to protect the separation of powers and above all freedom of opinion and the diversity of society,” she said.

“Opposition is part of democracy,” Merkel also added.

At the moment, Turkey is working on a draft of the new constitution, according to which the country is going become a presidential republic with big powers of the head of state.
