Eurosceptics defeat Merkel

In elections to the regional parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Angela Merkel’s party suffered a crushing defeat. Her Christian Democratic Union won only third place behind the right-wing conservative Alternative for Germany party. What’s more, this is the base district of CDU head and German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s constituency.

Election results

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Social Democrats received 30% of votes, Alternative for Germany 21, 8%, and CDU 19, 4%. The Left party suffered a crushing defeat in this eastern region, gaining only 12.5% of the vote.

The end of Merkel

It is in this region that Merkel's party previously received the most support. The election results in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mark the beginning of the end of the Merkel era. The catastrophic drop in the popularity of the current prime minister is linked to her suicidal immigration policy and the fact that Merkel has trailed the United States' policy of anti-Russian sanctions, which have hurt the German economy given its close links to Russia.
