South Korea and Japan approve agreement on intelligence

Tuesday, 22 November, 2016 - 15:00

Despite citizens’ protests of both countries, the governments have adopted a pre-approved agreement on the exchange of intelligence data between Seoul and Tokyo.

The reason for this agreement is reported to be North Korean activities in the field of nuclear and military research. At the same time the full text of the document is hidden before its signing, which is expected to carry out within a few hours - at 10:00 on November 23rd (Moscow time - 04.00) in Seoul.

The intelligence data collected using radar (as a part of the US missile defense system in South Korea) is going to be exchanged. Therefore, the signing of this agreement could be considered not only as a sign of the military cooperation, but also as a symbol of Japan's past commitment to the system of US-Asian relations, and, in some way, supporting President Park Geun-hye. It was her, who became the initiator and main lobbyist of the missile defense system. Moreover, the Defense Minister of South Korea is a close associate of Park Geun-hye.
