Anti-Chinese terrorist attack in Kyrgyzstan

30.08.2016

In Kyrgyzstan a suicide bomber attacked the Chinese embassy. It is reported that three people were injured, Kyrgyzstan nationals who worked at the embassy.

Factors of instability

According to authorities, the attack was timed to take place on independence day, which is celebrated today. Kyrgyzstan in the 2000's was the most unstable country in Central Asia. This included two color revolutions and pogroms against Uzbeks in Osh in 2010. Also is the historically difficult situation in the Uzbek part of the Ferghana Valley, where the Islamist terrorist network is active. They have support from the Islamists from neighboring Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Another factor of instability is the network of Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher living in the United States and accused by the Turkish authorities of organizing the coup attempt. Turkish leaders have repeatedly noted the penetration of these networks in the Kyrgyz government.

Who benefits

Together, these networks can use multiple factors to provoke instability in the country. Kyrgyzstan is the only Central Asian state that is a member of the EAEC. It is also part of the CIS, CSTO and SCO. The US is interested in reducing the influence of Russia and China in the region, as well as using the growing anti-Chinese sentiment to its benefit.
