A gunman killed three policemen and one civilian in Kazakhstan's financial hub Almaty on Monday, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The 27-year-old attacker, who was detained, also wounded two more policemen and is suspected of committing another murder last weekend, it said, adding that he had an accomplice who was still at large.

Several policemen have also been wounded.

Kazakhstan's National Security Committee said in a statement Monday it raised the terror threat level to red after the attack on the police station. It would not elaborate

Other witnesses reported on social networks that “an unknown person wearing black was shooting with a machine gun at police, trying to stop [their] car, and then ran in the eastern direction.”

It comes a month after a deadly assault in the northwestern town of Aktobe. Groups of men targeted gun stores and a military base, killing seven people. At least 18 attackers were killed by police during that attack.
