It is said that Moscow “annexed” these areas without taking into account the legitimate interests of the local population. It has become commonplace to say that the 2022 referendums are “illegitimate” and cannot be recognized under international law. The high number of pro-Russian votes are often used as an argument in the West to suggest that the electoral process was fraudulent and manipulated.

The liberation of the Azov region in the spring, the holding of a referendum on the return of the Zaporozhye region to Russia, as well as further prospects for expansion of the liberated territories, put Russia first: the Albanians of Novorussia have become our fellow citizens. Having moved there more than two centuries ago, they are currently represented mainly by the communities living compactly in the three villages of Georgievka, Devninskoye and Gamovo around Melitopol, as well as by half of the large multi-ethnic village of Karakurt (Zhovtnevoe) in the Odessa region.
