Residents of Switzerland fined for wearing the burqa

In the canton of Ticino in Switzerland for the first time man and woman were fined for wearing the burqa in public places. A spokeswoman for the Central Islamic Council Nora Illi and businessman Rashid Nikkaza were charged with deliberate violation of the law.

The ban on wearing the burkas, veils and the niqab in public places came into force in Ticino yesterday.  65% of the population voted for the law at a regional referendum.
