At least 35 people were killed and over 60 wounded in coordinated suicide attacks at a Shi’ite mausoleum north of Baghdad last night. Also, several militants allegedly stormed the site, shooting Eid al-Fitr festival pilgrims.

The first suicide bomber detonated an explosives belt near police officers at the external gate of the Mausoleum of Sayid Mohammed bin Ali al-Hadi at around 11:00pm local time (8:00pm GMT).

The second suicide bomber went inside the shrine and blew himself up in the middle of the crowd celebrating the festival of Eid al-Fitr. Meanwhile, gunmen opened fire on security personnel in the area.

Security gunned down the third bomber down before he could detonate his explosives belt.

Reurters reported that the mausoleum was also targeted by a rocket fire during the attacks.

The ISIS terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attacks and confirmed in a statement that the bombings had been carried out by three attackers wearing suicide belts.
