The society without trust

The worship of Fides

Underlying community life are inescapable values that enable coexistence and the development of social relations, among them trust among members and in institutions. In the days of archaic Rome, a deity Fides personified the good faith that should regulate relations between peoples and business between citizens. Her cult older than that of Jupiter can be traced back to King Numa Pompilius to whom is attributed the construction of the temple on the Capitoline Hill, Fides Publica.

Fides presided over loyalty and fidelity, foundational values of great civilizations that disappeared with the advance of time. The goddess was depicted on coins as a caned old woman, older than the father of the gods, her appearance instilling awe and representing wisdom.

Fides demanded respect for the given word that allowed access to power, which a lying and lying politician could never access. For he embodied the essence of the State and mediated the relationship between it and its citizens by guaranteeing the covenant with the people centered on Fides.

The values that give life to a people

The Romans considered trust and loyalty the cornerstones of the Mos maiorum, and no public or private relationship could escape this rule. The dignity of men worthy of trust because they were faithful and loyal made great that beacon of civilization that Rome still represents in the world. The decadence of civilization culminating in the advent of capitalism has rendered obsolete human qualities indispensable and indispensable in the classical world.

The honorability of the person based on the trust he inspired in his neighbor today has no value, replaced by the price of each person and his individual's purchasing power. There is no trust between sellers and buyers who fear not unjustifiably that they will be cheated, because the former is not interested in safeguarding the integrity of his reputation, but solely in deriving maximum profit with minimum effort. Gone is the fiduciary relationship between the State and the citizen, who fears the body that is supposed to protect him as a sadistic persecutor. Unfair taxes, fines and penalties of all kinds bedevil the lives of citizens reduced to consumers and taxpayers for the maintenance of an elephantine and unfair apparatus.

The difficulty of being tribal

Trust in the affections has diminished, people doubt the sincerity of partisans, friends and relatives, suspecting that behind sentimental attachment lies economic interest. The eclipse of values, the sense of honor, the pleasure of honesty, fidelity to principles, moral rules, inexorably cracks the trust relationship between community members. To this serious deficiency we can impute the disappearance of patriotism, of love for one's land, for the traditions of one's ancestors. Residual values alive only in tribal realities: sports fans, spiritual communities, revolutionary movements.

There where the human relationship remains based on trust, sharing and complicity the last glimmers of the clan spirit manifest. Outside these spheres protected from the degeneration of the nurturing society, the void is absolute. It is difficult to have confidence in a justice system that does not punish massacres such as that of the Morandi Bridge, that inquires citizens who defend themselves against criminals and condemns law enforcement officers who strike down dangerous criminals.

No prosecutions, on the other hand, against those responsible for the hydrogeological disruption that killed and destroyed territory in Romagna. The State that acquitted the pirate who rammed a navy vessel puts the Port Authority and Guardia di Finanzia under investigation for the shipwreck of illegal immigrants attributable solely to traffickers of new slaves.

What remains of the State

Equally it is difficult to believe in the politicians who have reduced the State to a pile of rubble, destroying the Italian economy, School, culture and language. Not worthy of the slightest trust are the unions that have not protected workers with the lowest salaries in Europe, who have not defended the unvaccinated suspended from work. Lack of trust in politics results in the withdrawal of the masses from electoral choice, from social engagement, from the duty to participate in the life of the State.

The individualistic and selfish Americanized world has eliminated the sense of belonging, identity and community spirit. Loneliness, depression, addictions are the pathological outcomes, a widespread weakness that leaves citizens at the mercy of the powers of dissolution. The terminal phase of capitalism with the tyranny of surveillance has taken the mad drift that began with the end of the Middle Ages to its extreme consequences.

The cycle is coming to an end with the replacement of peoples and the disappearance of local cultures, but those who stay awake in the darkest hour of the night will see the Light of dawn. The last men still alive endure on the ruins, while dogs feast on the corpses of lions believing they have won, but lions remain lions while dogs remain only dogs
