Russia's withdrawal of troops in Syria begins

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced yesterday that the Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, had received orders to start the process of withdrawal of the main forces from 15th March.
In a telephone conversation with President of Syria Bashar al-Assad on 14th March, the President of Russia stated that the fundamental objectives that were set before the Russian campaign in Syria had been completed. They agreed to the withdrawal of the main body of the aviation group of the Air-Space Forces of Russia. At the same time, to monitor compliance with the cessation of hostilities, the Russian side will retain a base in Syria to continue aviation flights.

Also, a conversation was held with the US President Barack Obama on the Syrian issue.

The military presence will continue

This does not mean that Russia's military presence will leave Syria entirely; Special Forces and military instructors will remain. Russia will continue to operate flights to oversee the peace process, which means that the work of the Military Air Space Forces will continue. In a few months, Russia’s only aircraft carrier will be sent to the coast of Syria to the military logistic base of the Russian Navy, near Latakia.

Also, Russian military experts and engineers will oversee the recovery and reconstruction of the country.

The employees of private security companies in Russia will, in addition, work alongside the military personnel in Syria.

The peace process

Russia is relying on the negotiation process, which is taking place under the auspices of the UN. After performing combat tasks that greatly undermined the possibilities of terrorism, talks with various opposition and armed groups in Syria will be intensified.

Also, a formal withdrawal gives Russia the opportunity to accuse the West should they attempt to transfer weapons to militants or instigate any provocation.

The results of the Russian military campaign

Firstly, the terrorist group ISIS and other illegal groups were significantly weakened, resulting in strategic territory being placed back under the control of the Government of Syria. Secondly, the smuggling of oil to Turkey was foiled, as well as the delivery of arms and ammunition from Turkey to Syria. Thirdly, the new Russian military capabilities were tested and demonstrated. Fourthly, the intervention in the Syrian conflict has enabled Moscow to hold the desired position on other issues - Syria has become an additional trump card in negotiations with the West in various areas, including Ukraine. Fifthly, Russia has strengthened its influence in Syria, and the region in general. Finally, the operation had a positive impact on the improvement of relations with Iran, the Lebanese Hezbollah, and other actors who oppose US hegemony.
