A series of terrorist attacks occurred yesterday in several places across Thailand.

Attacks on tourist infrastructure

The attackers’ targets were the cities of Surat Thani, Hua Hin, and the tourist island of Phuket. Four people were killed and 23 injured. Foreigners are among the victims.

A few more explosive devices were defused by security forces.

The main theory

Thai police have so far presented one theory, namely, that this is the work of international terrorists. It is possible that ISIS’ network has intensified its activities in Thailand.

After the referendum and before Mother's Day

The timing of the bombings comes right after the referendum on reforming the country’s constitution in which most citizens agreed to transfer more power to the military. The military leadership might now propose a rigid plan to counter terrorists and implement emergency measures.

It should be noted that today in Thailand marks the celebration of the birthday of Queen Sirikit, the wife of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). This holiday is Thailand’s national Mother's Day.
