Kerry expects difficult talks in Moscow

On July 14th, the US Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in Moscow for a two-day visit. In the capital he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Advocacy

The focus will be on the Syrian settlement. Several US media agencies indicated that Kerry will ask Moscow to cease combat missions and focus on humanitarian work. Washington needs to once again reformat the remains of pro-US militant groups.

Contradictions

The positions of Russia and the United States disagree on a variety of issues. Thus, Washington is demanding the immediate resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Moscow insists on holding democratic elections after the settlement in the country. The United States also tries to change the status of US-controlled terrorist groups to "moderate opposition". Russia is helping Assad's troops to restore security and stability throughout the country.

A difficult situation

Washington is rapidly losing ground on the Syrian issue. After Russia's entry into active military operations against the terrorists the situation began to develop not in favor of the US. Also, the recent statement by the Prime Minister of Turkey, indicating the desire to improve relations with Damascus and Baghdad, shows that the United States lost an important ally in Ankara. In such circumstances, Kerry will not be able to put pressure on the Russian side.
