The Gold statuette went to Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in the movie ‘Revenant’, which became the most attractive for the international media. The actor received his first Academy Award this year, although he was nominated for the sixth time. Social networks blew up with hundreds of jokes on this. The film tells the story of the conquest of the American Wild West and the survival of white colonizers under harsh conditions in a confrontation with the indigenous population of America.

Tom McCarthy's ‘Spotlight’ won the “Best Film” category. It tells the story of an investigation by journalists from the Boston Globe who uncovers acts of pedophilia among American priests. The same film got the statue for the best-adapted screenplay. Modern society, especially Western, receives basic attitudes through the media, and the content of the films are not usually subjected to critical analysis. In other words, millions of people now associate the word "priest" with the word "pedophile".

‘The Danish Girl’ was nominated for four awards. The plot tells the story of how the artist Gerda Wegener asked her husband Einar Wegener to pose as a female model. The portraits gain popularity, and Gerda continues to paint her husband as a woman. Einar likes it more and more and begins to live under the name of Lili Elbe. Later Elbe becomes the first person to have gender reassignment surgery. Alicia Vikander won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl.

Unusual racism

In addition, the 88th award will be remembered for the scandal relating to so-called racism: a few black film makers urged a boycott of the ceremony as there was an insufficient number of representatives of the race among the nominees. In fact, it can be regarded as a manifestation of black, and not white, racism as blacks are demanding specific, privileged conditions: to nominate a person for an "Oscar" not for their achievements, but simply on the basis of the color of their skin.
