Transcarpathia under the yoke of Kiev: is there any other way?
In turn Coup d'etat in Ukraine, gave the initiative to the right-wing radicals from Party "Svoboda" to establish the "Law on languages" which caused outrage not only among Russians but also among the Russian-speaking community of the country. The decision was condemned by the Hungarian authorities, who see in this a direct violation of the rights of ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine. According to the last census, which was conducted in Ukraine in 2001, the Hungarians in Transcarpathia, approximately 150,000 people, or about 12% of the total population of the region are ethnic hungarians. Hungarians living here are compact, along the border with the Hungarian state. Cultural and political center of Transcarpathian Hungarians is the city of Berehove, which clearly feels Hungarian influence. The inscriptions in town are bilingual, and Hungarian flags are hanging in the city. The Transcarpathian Hungarians still cannot find their place in modern Ukraine. At the domestic level Hungarians do not hide that they would like to be a part of Hungary.
In response to this in particular, the official Budapest showed concern about the possibility of establishing of Transcarpathian Hungarian areas of special district (Pritisnyansky district), which would include all the territories with majority of Hungarian minority. Hungary, is seeking to support its "compatriots abroad", by actively handing out Hungarian passports to Transcarpathian Hungarians, this however creates a legal, and a political problem, to Ukraine, however it seems holly justified considering the circumstances.
Relations of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Hungarian minority have always been very sharp and intense. At the same time with the Ruthenian population, which is autochthonous in the Transcarpathian region, the Hungarians today have developed good-neighborly relations. Ruthenians themselves say that they live close with the Hungarians together for 1,000 years. Rusyns also recognized as a separate nationality in Hungary, unlike in Ukraine. Transcarpathian Rusyns and descendants of Galicians (whose ancestors came from Galicia in Transcarpathia) have all on the contrary, there are still significant differences in the ideological level. As with the Ruthenians, and with the Hungarians Galicians relationships obviously are not set.
Extremist and ultranationalist party "Freedom" and "Right sector" practically hide that would like to get rid of Rusyns in Transcarpathia, Roma, Hungarians and Slovaks. Some activists say about plans to create in Transcarpathia analogue infamous concentration camp "Talerhof" in order to eradicate the Rusyn movement. Immediately after the "revolutionary" events in Kiev Ukrainian fascist organization "Right sector" started to solve a "Hungarian question". Extremists broke into the public council meeting in Berehove and simply broke it up. Hungarian Foreign Ministry immediately condemned the violence against the Hungarian minority by this right-wing groups.
More - more. Hungarian nationalists demanded from Kiev usurpers to create a new autonomy in western Ukraine. Party "Jobbik - For a Better Hungary", part of the current ruling coalition, demanded from Kiev authorities to create a Hungarian-Ruthenian autonomy in the Carpathian region in Transcarpathian, Lviv and Volyn regions. Vice-chairman of the party Marton Dondoshi officially appealed to Kiev and the international community to promote the emergence of a new autonomy in Ukraine. According to him, the international pressure on Kiev could lead to the emergence of a such entity. To Kiev it was also proposed to guarantee the use of local languages in the region.
Thus, after the fall of the legitimate authorities in Kiev began complex Transcarpathia geopolitical game. Based on the current situation of international relations and foreign policy situation in Hungary and the Transcarpathian region, we can conclude that the Hungarian government can take military action to protect its national minorities in the Transcarpathian region. And for that, it has all necessary bases. At the same time, taking into account the close relationship of the Hungarian authorities with the U.S., we can assume that Washington realizes the scenario of "controlled chaos" and consciously fueling confrontation through Budapest in Transcarpathia and the rest of Ukraine.
From the current situation seek their dividends other participants in the coup in Ukraine. Tyahnibok and Yarosh virtually do not hide that they want to gain a foothold in the Carpathians to by the forces of subordinate to them units to control oil and gas pipelines and transport interchanges.
More complex game are played by the biggest Transcarpathian oligarch Viktor Balogsa, who did not receive any real power by the new authorities in Kiev and who has on this occasion expressed his active discontent. He maneuvers between the triangle "Washington, Budapest and Kiev", not excluding the possibility of giving to Budapest the three Hungarian districts of Transcarpathia in exchange for political support of his plans for the rest of Ukraine. Another option for the political strategy of Baloga is separation of the strategically important Transcarpatia from Ukraine in exchange for his presidency in Kiev - because the position of a "coalition of the winners" is very shaky, and the ability to change the central government remains high.
For Transcarpathia, the dark times truly came. Region just uses force as a tool, which interests are not connected with the interests of its multinational people. Any form of interest or self-determination for the Ruthenian people should not be thought of for the time being. Destabilization, ethnic cleansing, struggle for the redistribution of property, and control of communications are turning into a "problematic spot" for the whole of Eastern Europe. Wasn't this what the organizers sought as the "triumph" of the coup in Kiev? Unfortunately, the EU and Ukraine today, are practically discharged of any forces capable to bringing peace to the Transcarpathian region.
