The European Parliament and the European Commission are planning to impose sanctions against Poland and even to deprive Warsaw’s right to vote in the EU Council. According to their opinion, the country “ignores the decision of the European Commission and endangers the basic values of the European Union”.

As it was said in a statement: “Practically speaking, one may expect the commission to put forward a document setting out the case that there is a clear threat of a serious breach by Poland of the values laid down in article 2 of the EU treaty”.

EU Vice-President Frans Timmermans said: “The Commission will not drop this matter and will continue to look for solutions in dialogue with Polish authorities without prejudice to other steps we might have to take if this dialogue continues to remain without results”.

At the same time the foreign minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn has initiated this process, describing the situation in Poland as “surprising and terrifying”. Earlier he also tried to exclude Hungary from the EU due to the anti-migrant results of the referendum, using the same arguments.
