UN Security Council doesn’t adopt resolution on Syria

Egypt, New Zealand and Spain developed the document, which would provide for a cessation of hostilities in Aleppo for a week, with which a number of countries was not previously agreed.

During the meeting of the UN Security Council the voting began at 22.00 (Moscow time), the resolution was not supported by the representatives of Russia, China and Venezuela. Thus, Moscow and Beijing, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, have put a veto on this document.

The Permanent Representative of Spain to the UN Roman Marchesi said: «The draft resolution was not passed as two permanent members voted against».

However, Russia was not against the imposition of the ceasefire to improve the humanitarian situation. But before the introduction some agreements, in particular, withdrawing terrorists needs to be achieved.
