Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa warned of a new “Condor Operation” aimed at undermining progressive governments in the region.

This new plan, according to President Correa, not only aims at intimidating, but also putting an end to progressive governments in the region.

“The right-wing is seeking revenge because it has been more than 10 years since the last time they were able to just pick up a phone and tell a sitting President what to do,” Correa said in a press release on Friday.

The Ecuadorean leader also referred to the current events unfolding in Brazil stating, “Military dictatorships are not needed anymore; they need submissive judges, a corrupt media that even publishes private conversations - which is absolutely illegal.”

Operation Condor was a coordinated, U.S.-backed attempt to wipe out opposition to dictatorships across South America in the 1970s and 1980s. Some 50,000 people are estimated to gave been killed or forcibly disappeared.
