Denmark tightens rules for receiving refugees

Thursday, 8 September, 2016 - 11:15

Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that he would insist on toughening the law on refugees. This will happen even if the EU considers that the amendments are contrary to EU law.

Previously, Denmark has tried to tighten the law on the admission of refugees and asylum seekers, but the attempt met with opposition from not only the EU but also of the opposition within the country. Representatives of human rights organizations believe many amendments inhuman. So, in 2014, international organizations have accused the government of Denmark in the fact that because of the forthcoming amendments, many refugee families will be separated from their children up to 5 years.

EU officials believe that Denmark is trying to get rid of the influx of refugees, without closing the borders, in order to avoid conflicts with its neighbors.
