Indian economy collapsed to meet its defense requirements

27.05.2020
Upon advice from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman,  the Indian Defence Ministry on issued directives providing for procurement of 26 spares and equipment for military use only from domestic suppliers, whereas India is a country with the highest Defense budget in this whole region and aggressively procuring weapons from foreign countries. During the cold-war era, the primary source of defense supplies was the former USSR. However, after the disintegration of the USSR, India turned its face toward the US. Now the US and Europe are the significant sources of their defense needs. It is well-understood that the American and European weapons are rather expensive, and there is no free lunch, while with the former USSR, there was the sale of firearms as well as gifts or Military-aid too.

All the items identified for procurement from domestic defense manufacturers will be used in shipbuilding. So far, the Defence Ministry has notified 127 items where purchase preference is given to local suppliers. Although the defense experts understand well the quality of domestic parts and know well that it will compromise on their defense capabilities, yet they are compelled to compromise.

India was pursuing an aggressive and expansionist policy, especially with its neighbors. With the hijacking of political powers by the extremist Hindus- RSS- Hindutva, the aggressive Indian motives are even more visible. India has disputes and conflicts will all its neighbors. In most of the cases, India has illegally occupied their territories and unwillingness with resolving disputes with them amicably. India has been playing delaying tactics and avoiding dialogue.

Indian territorial disputes with Nepal had taken a new turn, when Nepal issued a new Map, showing its whole territory, parts of Indian Occupied territories too. Amended Citizenship Act may impact two million Muslims and may face deportation to Bangladesh, and water disputes make two countries enemies. With Mayanmar, territorial disputes and refugee issues also made odd-relations between two countries. By supporting Tamil insurgents, India spoiled its relations with Sri Lanka.  Over-interference in domestic politics, its ties with the Maldives soared. The Ilegal occupation of Jammu & Kashmir, Gurdaspur, Juna Ghar, is the real cause of tension between India and Pakistan. Denial of right of Self-Determination of Kashmiri people for seven decades and non-implementation of UN resolutions passed in 1948 on Kashmir are genuine concerns for Pakistan. Frequent violation of line of control and cross-border terrorism is a matter of serious attention. Indian occupation of Chinese territory and border clashes are getting severe recently. India hosts the Dalai Lama’s exiled government of Tibet, and openly opposing BRI is causing discomfort between two countries. The over-tilt toward the US and Indian attempts to compete and contain China may be a genuine issue of concern for Beijing.

India is a hostile and aggressive country and always at odd with all its neighbors. So the Indian defense budget is rather high and is still piling lethal weapons. India is one of the most lucrative markets for global defense giants, as it figured among the top three importers of military hardware in the world for the last eight years.  According to Indian dreams, armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement in the next five years. India is dreaming increasing the existing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) cap to 74 percent,  will encourage global players like; Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Airbus, and Dassault Aviation to set up manufacturing hubs in India and bring niche technology.

While the facts are that the Indian Economy has been collapsed and soon enters into a recession, the economic data compiled by independent resources shows vulnerability. Multinational companies are leaving India on the grounds of the deteriorated political situation and poor law and order situation. No one is willing to invest in India. Indians are taking their capital out of the country, and a considerable brain drain is witnessed. India has no fiscal space to procure spare parts and compromising its defense capabilities. PM Modi is leading India toward disaster.
