Arrest of the Muslim-Brotherhood as a form of confrontation with Iran

28.03.2022

On December 19, 2021, an Egyptian court sentenced Mahmoud Ezzat, the current mentor of the Muslim Brotherhood, to life imprisonment in the case of "cooperation with Hamas and Hezboll." However, the junta did not limit its accusations to the leading Palestinian movement, the criminal generals of Cairo accused Ezzat of having ties with Hezbollah.

This reproach was not born from scratch. The fact is that despite the difficult relationship between the Axis of Resistance alliance and the Muslim Brotherhood movement, the Axis supports the Islamic Awakening, where the main actor until recently was the Ikhwan party. Egypt at the turn of 2011-2012 was the main epicenter of the ideological movement of the “Brotherhood”. Despite the serious differences between the Islamic Republic of Iran, as the main actor of the Axis of Resistance and Egypt during the reign of the late Morsi, contacts at the highest level continued even after the fall of the Ikhwan government. Tehran maintained contact with the three main strands of Egypt's splintered Muslim Brotherhood.

After almost all the main groups of the Brotherhood realized the pernicious role of Turkey and Qatar, the idea arose among the old leaders of the movement to conclude an alliance with Tehran. By the way, the young factions of Ikhwan realized the need for such an alliance back in 2013, immediately after the criminal coup. However, the internal split that occurred and the strong influence of pro-American puppets on key figures of the Brotherhood did not allow a new Islamic Union to happen.

The very fact that from time to time information about the ties between the Muslim Brothers of Egypt and the Iranians pops up in the media shows that Tehran is still faithful to the long-standing "friendship" with the leading Islamic organization of Egypt and is seriously considering the possibility of continuing fruitful cooperation.

For its part, the junta is trying to monitor any contacts between the Muslim Brotherhood factions and the Islamic Republic, and judging by the resumption of arrests against the Ikhwans, Mukhabarat decided to play ahead of the curve. After all, it is obvious that the collapse of the Egyptian economy and the subsequent social explosion is a matter of time.

Despite the failure of the previous government, division and repression, the Brotherhood remains the leading political force in Egypt. The fact that the former main allies in the face of Turkey and Qatar easily rejected the Muslim Brotherhood played into the hands of Iran. Tehran is ready to expand cooperation with the Ikhwan factions, for its part, a number of Brotherhood leaders are also ready to reciprocate. The people's leaders of Egypt see who is their true friend, and who is a hypocrite and a puppet of the Great Satan.

Given the expected split within the junta's generals and officers, the retreat of Americans from the region, the revival of the Muslim Brotherhood and the influence of the IRGC, it is clear that the military dictatorship will not last long. Sisi understands these points and is trying to be proactive, the wave of arrests of old leaders ikhwans is designed to reduce ties with Iran, but the IRGC has many other options for interacting with the people of Egypt, because one of the main rules of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards is "never limit yourself to cooperation with one party."
