US Congress rejects Montenegro joining NATO

The upper chamber of the US Congress failed to ratify the protocol on the accession of Montenegro to NATO. It could only be approved by unanimity since there was no time for debate. However, two senators made some amendments. Hence why it was not adopted with this simplified procedure.

Important postponement

This means that the protocol will now be considered in January, and most likely, the new convocation of Congress will not accept this document. By then, the majority in Congress will belong to the Republican Party. In addition, the inauguration of Donald Trump is scheduled for January 20th.

Trump’s Realism

The new US president is not interested in aggressively expanding NATO to the East and further escalation in relations with Russia. His main task will be the United States’ national security. The only purpose of Montenegrin’s accession to NATO is further fragmentation of the Serbian world and an attack on Moscow, so the new administration will refuse such a rash step.

Important victory

Stopping Montenegro's integration into NATO could be considered the first major geopolitical victory of Serbs in the last 20 years. This could be the starting point for restoring the unity of the Orthodox peoples of the Balkans.
