Trump ordered Mexican Border Wall

On Wednesday, January 25th, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order starting the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico. The new president also claimed that Mexico would pay for the wall “100%.”

Building a 2,000 mile (3,200 km) barrier along the Mexican border was one of Mr. Trump’s key pledges in his election campaign.

Mexico refused to pay

President Enrique Peña Nieto declared during his address to the nation that Mexico will not pay for Donald Trump's border wall. He said that "Mexico doesn't believe in walls".

However, Nieto made no mention of cancelling or postponing his trip to Washington on January 31st to meet the new US president. The Mexican president expressed hope for building a good relationship with Trump's administration.

Next step

Next, Mr. Trump is expected to announce immigration restrictions for seven countries with Muslim-majority populations in the Middle East and Africa. This could affect refugee programs.

These countries are believed to be Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen.

This plan is in line with the ban on Muslim immigration that Mr. Trump proposed during his campaign, his argument being that such a step is warranted given concerns over terrorism.
