Montenegro receives official invitation to join NATO
Montenegro has received an official invitation from NATO’s General Secretary to join the military alliance. The process will last some months. The joining of this military alliance provokes anger among ordinary people of Montenegro, but the ruling elite is determined to continue the process despite mass protests. The mainly Orthodox population of the ex-Yugoslavian republic doesn’t want to be part of the alliance that brought chaos to the region in 1999. Thousands of people carry on protesting in the capital city of Podgorica. About half of the population is against NATO. The main promoter of NATO integration is Montenegro’s Prime-Minister Milo Đukanović, a figure well known for his deep relations with international criminal structures including the Italian mafia.
