Armenia - in the spotlight

10.08.2016

Russian and Armenian Presidents Vladimir Putin and Serge Sargsyan held a meeting today in Moscow. The main issues are bilateral cooperation between the two countries and the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

Global context

For Russia, this meeting is essential because it must consolidate the results of the two previous meetings that Putin held in St. Petersburg with Erdogan in Baku with Aliyev and Rouhani on creation of the Eurasian continental alliance.  Because for Armenia, these things matter very much, and Russia will use all the methods to persuade the Armenian side to take an unpopular path.

Peace plan

It is most important for Moscow to convince Yerevan to accept the peace plan, involving the transfer five of the seven areas to Azerbaijan, presently occupied by Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenian forces. These areas are not included in the formal part of the unrecognized republic. The transfer of five areas, according to Moscow, should open the way for the entry of Azerbaijan into the Eurasian Union, where Armenia is already a member.  In Vladimir Putin's meeting with President Erdogan of Turkey, and before that with the leaders of Iran and Azerbaijan, Aliyev and Rouhani, the issues of Eurasian integration of Azerbaijan and the Russian plan for a peaceful settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh were also discussed.

US Opposition

The existence of the Russian plan is used by the US networks of influence. They are playing on nationalist feelings of Armenians to kindle a revanchist mood, trying to prove the harmfulness of an alliance with Russia. Not excluded are attempts to destabilize the situation in the country and to foment provocations in the zone of Karabakh conflict, by Armenian nationalists. This refusal to compromise on the Russian plan will only lead to the destabilization of the situation in the region, and a possible war.
